If angry—consider ‘sleeping on it’


A wise mother relayed to me this advice. When you are angry or furious with someone, take a break and instead of jumping back and talking to the person who is angering you, instead sleep on it. It is amazing how time gives perspective. For a major issue, it allows you to word your thoughts better and in many cases, some things that seemed pretty big are actually petty and the next day takes the anger away. There is a saying in relationships, “Never go to bed angry at one another” and that is pretty good advice—but that said, in the heat of the moment, sometimes it is better to push an issue off one day or at least till you get a nap.
