If you haven’t played a sport in over 10 years—be careful

I was at my son’s hockey tournament in August. We stayed at a really nice hotel that had beautiful squash courts—just sitting empty. I had played squash competitively a ton in the 90s before stopping in 2000 due to back issues that stemmed from playing squash. Given that it had been 12+ years since then, I thought it might be fun to play a game. Within 5 minutes of playing, I realized two things
a)my skill level was at about 5% of what it used to be
b)my conditioning was at about 10% of what I used to have.

After a quick warm-up, I started playing and during minute 6, I heard a big bang and then it felt like a saw went across the back of my leg. My right Achilles tendon had ruptured. Surgery was required and it would keep me ‘on the shelf’ for 3 months—not to mention the fact I couldn’t drive. All could have been avoided if I had just used common sense.
If you are over 40, be very, very careful about what sports you try to ‘relive’.
