If you have the hiccups, you usually get people smacking you on the back, telling you to hold your breath or trying to scare the living daylights out of you. The cure might be as simple as a spoonful of sugar. People say that something in pure sugar relaxes the muscles that contract when you hiccup, making it easier to stop. If nothing else, it's a good excuse to reach for the sugar bowl every now and then.
