How to Conquer Sleepless Nights

I've always struggled with falling asleep, and to be honest, I still do sometimes. But, I've discovered a few tips along the way that have helped improve my sleeping habits.

1. Wind Down - I work a lot and I generally eat out. I relax in between plans, but I used to try and crash as soon as I got home. I've learned to try to relax and unwind for at least a half hour prior to going to bed. It helps your body get into a more content mindset and your mind is more relaxed and ready to shut off for the night.

2. Soft Noises - I purchased a fan a while ago for nights when sleeping with the windows open just wasn't enough to cool me down. Somehow, I found myself using this fan throughout the winter. I even downloaded a fan app on my phone to mimic the noise I was used to falling asleep to. Without this sound, I find it's much more difficult to drift off to sleep. Whether it's music, a fan, a humidifier, or a rainmaker, find a soothing sound that lulls you to sleep.

3. Don't Stress - This is easier said then done, I know. But, instead of freaking out about tomorrow's job interview or focusing on financial woes, concentrate on something simple and easy. Think about a book you just read, a movie you just saw, or a fun night out with friends of family. Focusing on relaxing events will help put your mind at ease and make it easier to fall asleep.

4. Use the Right Lighting - This tip varies for some people, but for me, I sleep best in absolute darkness. I can't have a hall light on, the window blinds opened, or even an alarm clock light shining weakly. Instead, I use my phone as an alarm, invested in curtains, and learned to shut my door if other people were awake.
