How to dress in Russia

Unfortunately Russia hasn't quite got the message that it's what's inside that counts, face control is a fact of life, especially in the big cities, and if yours doesn't fit, you might be missing out on the chicest bars, the best restaurants, and the most memorable parties. Even if the glamorous life isn't your thing, blending in is always a top travel tip, no tourist should be drawing attention to themselves in foreign countries if they want to stay safe and hassle-free.

So, after spending some time in Russia, I've got some advice on how to blend in - Moscow style, and make sure you pass for one of the locals.

Girls, the dress code is UP. even if you think it's too much, it probably isn't! It may be icy out but flat shoes or boots just won't cut it in St. Petersburg! Russian women are adept at navigating the snow and ice wearing sky high heels, and if you want to fit in, you need to embrace the stiletto. Although the weather may be Arctic, bundling yourself up in ski wear will mark you out as a tourist. Even if you're wearing a big quilted jacket, you need to be showing off your waist! Russian women are eternally feminine, and they like to show off their impressive figures, so belt up - literally!
Speaking of jackets, if you really want to disguise yourself as a local you're going to have to feel the fur. Everyone, young, old, beautiful...not so pretty, is wearing fur in Russia come winter. And unfortunately, faux fur is practically extinct this side of the border. If you really can't bear (sorry!) the though of wearing animal fur, stick to a puffa jacket rather than throwing on a fake, Russia does fur Coca-cola style, it's always the real thing!

Men, as always, have it much easier. Fashion doesn't seem to have a great impact on the majority of Russian men, who seem to dress for comfort and warmth over aesthetics. If there is an influence here, it appears to be the 80s, there are a lot of quilted jackets and sheepskin coats flying around, and I counted three mullet hair cuts on the metro today (I wish I was joking!). Don't be too flashy, unless you're in the big cites heading out with the beautiful people, in which case it's western designer gear all the way! And always wear a hat, actually that is advice for both sexes; as soon as the snow falls dig out that beanie, because you won't ever blend in without one!
