Hunting Tips: Protect Your Hearing!

Hunters are very serious about their sport, but

Hunters are very serious about their sport, but they sometimes forget one of the most important parts of the hunt: ear protection. Here, Dr. Julie Prutsman of the Sound Relief Hearing Center offers seven tips on protecting your hearing during hunting season.

1. Always use some type of hearing protection any time a gun is fired.

2. Always have disposable ear plugs handy—make them part of the gear.

3. Double-protect ears, like putting muffs over plugs, when shooting big-bore firearms.

4. Choose smaller caliber firearms for target practice and hunting.

5. Choose single-shot firearms instead of lever action, pump, or semi-automatic guns.

6. Avoid shooting in groups or in reverberant environments.

7. Use electronic or nonlinear hearing protection devices for hunting.
