Parenting and Parkinson's

You may feel that you need to describe Parkinson’s from A to Z and what they will expect over time—but children are often satisfied with just the here and now. For example, I explained at one point to my children that I was usually tired by 9 so if they could make their own sandwiches that would save me struggling to peel slices of meat one by one at a time when I had less energy. They just accepted and took the information and then danced off to shoot some baskets. I think when communicating with children about Parkinson’s that they only need snippets of information at a time.

Bio: Shelby Hayter was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at age 42.
