In sports, there are great athletes who could tell you what they were going to do—then do it and you still couldn’t block their shot, hit their pitch etc. However, for the bulk of casual athletes, being predictable is a killer. Having pitched and on many days having only very average ‘stuff’, the solution that helped me was to be unpredictable. For instance, instead of a curve, fastball combination with a few minor changes, I would throw 5 curves in a row –anything to break the predictable pattern. I would quickly throw pitch after pitch but then sometimes if a hitter looked ‘antsy’ I would be more methodical. The unpredictable principle works in any sport and in life in general. The only exception I can think of is driving your car—don’t put on your left blinker and then turn right.
