The economy sucks -- that’s not news to anyone these days. People who graduated between 2008 and 2012 have had some of the worst job competition America has ever seen, even among college degree holders. I looked for full-time work for two years...with a Master’s degree. My advice to recent grads who are unable to find work in their field? Just do something, anything in the meantime. Join a landscaping team (you might laugh, but I mowed lawns and weed-whacked for two years to pay my student loans), pick up some holiday hours at the mall, get a job running errands. If part-time work sounds terrible and you’re not hurting for money, volunteer or take internships. It’s not fun and, quite honestly, it can feel demeaning when you have a college degree; the fact is, though, every activity you do while you’re looking for a career becomes a resume-builder for the future (yes, even mowing people’s lawns). Being unafraid to work hard when times are tough shows tenacity that future employers will appreciate, even if right now it seems like a waste of energy.
