Nick Brendon--stuttering and facing adversity

When I was twenty, I still stuttered, I had low self-confidence, and my parents were getting divorced.

I had a talk with God and decided to confront my fears and take an acting class despite the fact that my biggest phobia at that time was being in front of people.  The class was nerve-wracking but it helped me learn to concentrate better.  I managed to control my speech during auditions, but still stuttered occasionally while working.

When I am having a difficult time, I talk to God, meditate, and listen to music.  The pain that accompanies any letdown in life tends to numb after a while.  At the lowest points when my mood is being affected,  I tell myself, “This is not how you truly view life.”  I rely on both myself and my family, depending on what the situation is.  Faith also helps me keep things in perspective.

Overcoming stuttering has given me confidence even though it was painful when I would lapse.   When you are facing adversity, you should analyze why you are where you are.  Realize that life is precious.  Ask yourself, “Are you really happy and do you know what makes you happy?” As long as you feel something, whether it’s joy or sadness, you can be inspired to get up off the floor and try again.
